Limited edition rugs carry a special kind of appeal. They stand apart from standard offerings, not simply because they are produced in smaller numbers, but because each step in their creation feels more personal and carefully considered. In this post, we will guide you through the life of one such rug—from its initial concept to the moment it arrives at your home—highlighting the extra steps we take to ensure its rarity and significance are more than just words.
Starting with a Thoughtful Design
Every limited edition rug begins with a concept shaped by our design team. They draw inspiration from cultural references, ancient motifs, or elements of Irish landscapes. Before any weaving begins, we refine sketches and confirm the colour palette. This involves testing how certain shades of wool appear under different lighting conditions, or how one line of pattern interacts with another. By the time we settle on the final layout, we have a blueprint that balances tradition and individuality.
Securing Special Fibres and Materials
Unlike larger production runs, which rely on bulk orders of standard colours, our limited edition rugs involve a more considered approach. For our contemporary palette, we use established colour ranges that streamline production on the loom. However, our heritage palette introduces specialised colour combinations requiring a custom loom setup, making those hues both rarer and more expensive. We still prioritise the same high-quality wool used throughout our collections, but tailor our fibre quantities to the smaller batch size, ensuring each run captures the exact tones and textures we intend.
A More Exclusive Finish
By adapting our loom and material choices this way, every rug emerges with a character that isn’t simply pulled from a warehouse shelf. In the case of the heritage palette, the extra effort needed to achieve those custom colours transforms each piece into a distinct statement—one made possible only through careful coordination among suppliers, weavers, and finishers. Knowing that so few identical rugs will ever be created inspires everyone involved to treat the process as a craft project rather than routine manufacturing.
Weaving with Care and Precision
At our weaving partner’s facility in Salisbury, technicians and skilled weavers set aside time to produce these limited edition patterns. With each pass of the loom, they bring the design to life. Each rug receives close scrutiny to ensure we deliver perfection. If any aspect looks slightly off; a line of a pattern seeming too harsh for example, then adjustments can be made promptly.
The craftsmen know these rugs are not part of a long run where minor variations might be overlooked. Instead, they treat each piece as an opportunity to present their skill in its best light. The outcome is a rug that feels more personal: fewer copies exist, and each one has passed through hands that fully understand its uniqueness.
Cutting, Backing, and Finishing in Ireland
Once woven, the fabric is sent to Ireland, where our team will cut it to the specified dimensions. Next comes the secondary backing, made of Irish linen applied with care by a skilled craftsperson. The linen adds substance to the rugs, making them plusher and offering a much more substantial finish whilst adding a layer of authenticity and supporting an irish heritage industry.
Because we’re working with fewer rugs, there’s more freedom to pay attention to tiny details. Edges are bound carefully, and any decorative finishing touches. By the end of this stage, the rug feels complete: distinctive in design, structure, and identity.
Inspection and Documentation
Before your rug leaves our workshop, it undergoes a thorough inspection. We check the overall pattern alignment, ensure the pile height meets our standards, confirm the backing is secure, and note any characteristic that makes it stand out. Limited edition pieces often include a small certificate or a unique label showing which number in the series your rug represents. This documentation not only proves authenticity but also adds an emotional element—knowing you own, say, the 7th rug out of just 99 created.
Careful Packing and Delivery
The final step before the rug reaches your doorstep involves careful packing. Since no detail is too small, we ensure that the packaging reflects the effort behind the rug’s creation. The rug is rolled, packged in bags hand-made in Ireland, and placed in a container designed to prevent damage in transit. Some limited editions might include a note or a printed page explaining a bit about the chosen design or the historic source that inspired it.
When the package arrives, you will open it to find not just a new piece of décor, but an item shaped by careful choices, skilled weaving, and personal attention at every step. It is the difference between something that’s simply good-looking and something that feels genuinely meaningful.
A limited edition rug is more than the sum of its materials. It carries the weight of its concept, the selective sourcing of fibres, the deliberate weaving of a design not commonly seen, and the extra steps taken in finishing and inspection. By understanding this process, you can appreciate the story behind that piece of wool and pattern at your feet—a reminder that authenticity and rarity still have a place in today’s world.
